The End of A Journey

ChurchWebStrategies.org is shutting down in August 2022. This has been a fantastic journey, but my life has new and different priorities. But first, I will share a few parting thoughts before I shut things down.

In June of 2011, I envisioned creating content that would help the global church evolve its digital media platforms. Starting in July 2011, I made content every single week for nearly 5 years. I used it as a way to both further the Gospel and enhance my professional career. It was a wonderful learning experience. But of course, I would like to share some of those lessons.

Say Smart Things

Early on I was nervous about what I had to say. I was new to the world of UX and felt that I needed to compensate for my inexperience. What I was saying sounded great, but insecurity crept in. I used complex words to get across simple ideas. It took quite a while before I realized that the best way to sound intelligent is to say smart things. Big words might impress some people. Yet smaller, simpler phrases get the point across to a wider audience. If you have a good product, you do not need to market it much.

You Might Be Wrong

Doing something incorrectly multiple times only makes you proficient at it. As with my previous lesson, there are many things I tried to do with this blog. This includes my approach to the short-lived podcast, creating stock images, and working with WordPress themes. Throughout history, humans have been wrong about a great many things. Approach your next project with the assumption that you just might be wrong.

Diversify Your Education

I have been told many times to never stop learning. However, experience has taught me that diversity in that learning is just as important. This can range from reading a book on a people culture you are not familiar with. Or you can read on a topic, but from an author with an opposing viewpoint. Perhaps learn a new hobby that is different from anything else you have ever done. The act of learning something new is exhilarating for your creative mind. You do not need a pandemic to take the time to learn something new!

Action Item

Since July of 2011, I have written 307 action items. This 308th one is to reflect on how you can help your community. That can be your local church, the communications industry, or your next-door neighbor. The return on investment for helping others is satisfaction as well as education. While this concept is rooted in a Biblical story it is something everyone, regardless of faith, can employ. Go make something happen.
